To read or not to read

Four weeks in and I am really beginning to look forward to Thursdays and these posts to see what you all are doing in your own school’s.

If you are new to Study of the Composers, feel free to grab the button over there on the right, post it onto your blog, and join right in!

Now is the portion of the program where I tell you what we did this week.

I would love to tell you that we did some wonderful thing……  Truth is we didn’t do any work with Mozart this week.  ….. yet.  Yesterday it was on our schedule to do right after piano practice.

Problem was, that about 3 songs into practicing, Hunter grew a wild hair.  He decided to get up from the bench and show me this “cool trick” he had been working on.  It involved old couch cushions stacked up, running, jumping and flipping.  I uttered the standard mom caution, and stated that if it had to do with jumping and flipping I didn’t want to see it.  He, caught up in the uber coolness of his own amazingness, proceeded to show the trick…. without the running, and attempted a standing flip.

He landed smack on the back of his head and jarred his neck so completely I was tempted to take him to have it X-rayed.  I very safely got him to my bed where he could lay flat and undisturbed, and had him lay on some ice off and on….  He cooled his heels, staring at the ceiling for about an hour and a half until, Big Daddy, our military medic, came home from work and gave him the once over and declared him “ok”, but told him he was not to wrestle or jump around for the next few days.

****sigh****

some days…….. just don’t go like you plan……..

Well now that I have been completely transparent about how we DIDN’T do Mozart (yet) this week…

How is it going with you?

  1. i started bouncing around your links and old posts and realized i could be sucked in for hours and i really should eat breakfast before noon today, so i’ll just ask you- what are you using for your study the composers thing- would it work age wise with lee and (maybe eli if i did it when he was home)? very cool you have giveaways! when i grow up i wanna write for them and have one of these cool-i-o blogs too. luv ya! i am starting to plan for first grade now. i was gonna wait, but procrastination doesn’t seem like a good idea. and really with the way i plan and think it will probly take me all school year to plan somethimng i will love teaching and he’ll love learning and that i can get a good price on or for free. you can keep checkin on me to see if i’m on track with that.

    • I use books from the library on Composers. We read them, draw maps, make copies from them, paste them in a folder or time line. There are specific curriculum’s out there that will help with it and have certain things to study…( click on some of the past links of these posts and you will see the TONS of materials that are out there!) I just figured we could take a composer a month or so…. get their music CD’s to listen too during the week, and learn more about them. I want the boys to appreciate all kinds of music, and make the process as painless as possible.

it would totally work with Lee, just get some music, and a few books and read them to her. They don’t have to be informative books all of them, use some historical fiction and other things.

  2. I am so glad to read that your son is ok! I couldn’t help but smile, though, at how quickly our “best laid plans” become just that– plans. That is truly the beauty of homeschooling, I believe, to be able to adjust as needed. :-)

We went to an 18th century estate yesterday for their homeschool festival. It was really fun (and educational! Even my husband and I learned some new things. In fact, we learned a lot!) :-) I put some pictures on my blog. We are looking forward to doing it again next year.

    Many blessings,
    Lisa
